Baggage Blues? Here's How to Get Compensated for Your Damaged Luggage

May 8, 2023 | By: Gurvy Travel

If your luggage has been damaged during your recent flight, don't worry - you can file a claim and receive compensation from the airline. Although most bags are delivered safely and without any damage, it is still possible for damage, loss, or delay to occur.

When an airline is responsible for the damage, you can either receive a repaired bag or compensation based on the depreciated value of the bag. However, there are limits to the amount of compensation you can receive, and not all items are covered.

Here are the main bullet points (to streamline your time) for how to get compensation for damaged luggage:

  • Check your airline's policy on liability for damaged baggage
  • Collect as much information as possible, including reference numbers from the baggage claim office, flight information, and photos of the damaged bag
  • Depending on the airline, additional documentation may be required, such as the original luggage receipt, baggage claim tickets, or ticket receipt
  • Report any luggage damage within 24 hours of landing for domestic flights and within seven days of landing for international flights
  • If the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has opened and inspected your bags, and you suspect damage has occurred, contact the TSA directly
  • Ensure your luggage lock is TSA approved to prevent any damage during inspection.
