Everyone talks about Capri.
Almost nobody talks about Ischia.
And honestly? That might be one of the best things about it.
After visiting this beautiful island in the Bay of Naples, there are a few things I wish someone had told me before I arrived.
Many travelers assume Ischia is a small island that can be explored in a couple of hours.
Not true.
Ischia is actually the largest island in the Bay of Naples and is made up of several distinct towns, beaches, vineyards, and mountain villages. You'll want transportation, whether that's taxis, buses, private drivers, or a rental scooter to properly explore it.
I knew Ischia was famous for thermal springs.
I didn't realize just how much they are woven into island life.
The island sits atop volcanic activity, creating natural hot springs, thermal pools, and wellness experiences that have attracted visitors for centuries.
Whether you visit a thermal park, enjoy a spa treatment, or simply relax in naturally heated waters overlooking the sea, this is one of the experiences that makes Ischia unique.
This was probably my biggest surprise.
While nearby Capri can feel crowded and polished, Ischia still feels authentically Italian.
You'll find families gathering in piazzas, local bakeries, neighborhood cafés, fishermen returning to port, and fewer crowds than many of Italy's more famous destinations.
It's the kind of place where you slow down without even realizing it.
There are hills.
Lots of hills.
But the reward is spectacular.
Colorful villages, dramatic coastlines, castle views, terraced vineyards, and endless blue water seem to appear around every corner.
Comfortable walking shoes are essential, but so is taking your time. Some of the island's most memorable views are found when you wander a little off the main path.
Even if you're staying at a beautiful resort (I definitely was!), get out and explore.
Visit charming Sant'Angelo, stroll through Ischia Ponte, admire the iconic Castello Aragonese, stop for a long seaside lunch, and explore the island's different personalities.
The magic of Ischia isn't just one beach or one hotel.
It's the feeling of discovering an island that still manages to surprise travelers.
If Capri is the glamorous celebrity of the Bay of Naples, Ischia is the friend everyone wishes they had discovered sooner.
It's beautiful, authentic, relaxing, and full of experiences that don't feel manufactured for tourists.
And that's exactly why so many travelers who visit once find themselves planning a return trip before they've even left.
